What is HIFU?
HIFU stands for High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound.
It is a non-surgical, non-invasive cosmetic treatment that uses focused ultrasound energy to target layers of tissue beneath the skin’s surface.
The ultrasound energy creates thermal coagulation points, which stimulates the production of new collagen and elastin.
What areas can HIFU treat?
The most common treatment areas include:
Face and Neck: Lifting the brows, jowls, and neck area.
Décolletage (chest): Improving lines and wrinkles.
Body: Sometimes used for localized fat reduction and contouring.
How does HIFU work for skin tightening?
The focused ultrasound energy bypasses the outermost layer of skin (epidermis) and targets the SMAS (Superficial Musculoaponeurotic System) layer, which is the same layer surgeons tighten during a surgical facelift.
The heat generated in these deeper layers causes existing collagen fibers to contract and stimulates the long-term production of fresh, new collagen. This process gradually results in tighter, firmer, and lifted skin.
Is HIFU painful?
While typically not described as painful, most patients feel some discomfort during the treatment.
Sensations often include warmth, a tingling feeling, or sharp pricks of heat in the deeper layers.
The sensation is temporary and only lasts while the ultrasound energy is being delivered. Many clinics offer topical numbing cream or pain relief options beforehand.
How long does the treatment take?
A full face and neck treatment usually takes between 60 to 90 minutes.
Smaller areas, like just the brow or neck, may take around 30 minutes.
Is there any downtime?
